How to Apply For Sales Tax Number in North Carolina?
 

Who needs a sales tax permit in North Carolina?

  •  You are required to apply for the North Carolina Sales Tax Number if you are engaged to sell any taxable products or services.
  • A person is exclusively involved selling tangible items to wholesalers are not required to register for sales and use tax NC.
  • A person who participates making taxable sales on two or more occasions in one calender year or twelve months must file sales tax returns to the North Carolina Department of Revenue.

Use tax must be paid to the NC DOR on the taxable items, if the sales tax was not collected on the taxable sales either bought the local or out of state buyers.

How to apply for a North Carolina Sales Tax Registration?

  • You can file sales and use tax license at the North Carolina Department of Revenue website electronically.
  • NC DOR usually issues a NC Sales Tax License the same day, you complete sales and use tax application online.NC DOR process manual application in estimated ten business days.
  • There is no filing fee to get a sales and use tax license for North Carolina, but the service companies can charge fees to make the process easy for you.
  • You will file a correction form "NC-AC", if you moved from one place to another instead of applying for a new sales tax license.
  • You have to display North Carolina sales and use tax certificate prominently at the business place.
  • Flea market and trade show vendors are also required to obtain a sales tax certificate to conduct business in the state of North Carolina.

North Carolina Sales and Use Tax Number Transfer

An existing business cannot transfer to North Carolina Sales and Use Tax License to a new owner. A new business owner has to apply for a new sales tax certificate.

How to terminate NC Sales Tax Number?

  • You have to fill out out of business form "NC-BN" to cancel or inactive your sales and use tax number electronically.
  • A final return along with prior dues must be filed with the NC DOR.
  • Your sale tax certificate will be automatically inactive by the North Carolina Department of Revenue, if you failed to file any return in 18 months.

North Carolina Sales and Use Tax Filing

  • Is Sales and Use Tax liability $100 but less than $20,000 per month, you should file a return monthly and pay taxes on or before the 20th day of each month for all taxes due for the preceding calendar month.
  • If you have collected sales and use tax less than $100 per month, you should file a return quarterly and pay taxes due on or before the last day of the month for all taxes due for the preceding calendar quarter.
  • If your tax liability is at least $20,000 a month, you should file a return monthly and pay taxes on or before the 20th day of each month for all taxes due for the preceding calendar month and include a prepayment for the next month’s tax liability. Monthly with prepayment returns are required to be filed online.
